Au Pair Programme SpainCosts, working hours, time off & Co.
Here you will find many details about various topics, such as the au pair contract, pocket money and working hours of your au pair.
In Spain, there is no official au pair programme. If your au pair is an EU or EFTA citizen or comes from Canada or New Zealand, he/she may nevertheless work as an au pair at your home. DutiesThe au pair primarily helps you looking after your children. Besides childcare, helping with household chores forms part of an au pair's duties. Check with your au pair well in advance what his/her exact duties will be. It is also recommended to define these duties in the au pair contract. Further information can be found on our page Contract, insurance, driving licence & Co. CostsHosting an au pair consequently implies higher living costs. An au pair is an additional adult living at your home. Board and lodgingAn au pair is entitled to free board and lodging at your home during the entire stay. The same applies in case of illness and during the au pair's holidays. Furthermore, the au pair receives a weekly pocket money from you. Pocket money Au pairs in Spain earn 50-70 euros per week. Working hoursAn au pair works 30 hours per week including two evenings of babysitting per week. Time offAu pairs in Spain are entitled to one day off per week. One day a month, this day should be a Sunday. HolidayThere are no consistent regulations concerning the au pair holiday in Spain. You should come to an agreement with your au pair well in advance on how much holiday he/she will be entitled to. Our recommendation: an au pair gets four weeks of holidays provided that he/she stays with your family for 12 months. Au pairs and host families can take this value as a basis for calculating the amount of holiday in case of longer or shorter placements. Language courseAn au pair should attend a Spanish language course in order to optimally learn the language. The au pair normally bears the costs himself/herself. As a host family, you may help your au pair to find an appropriate language course. Termination of contractThe legal period of notice is two weeks. This period allows you to find a new au pair. At the same time, you also need some time to arrange the au pair's return trip or to find a new host family for au pair. More information for host families in Spain:
